Suggested Ingredients

Generally when cooking goat in a slow cooker, you should plan to have on hand:

  • 1 lb. stew goat meat/curry cubes OR shanks OR shoulder steaks cut into cubes
  • 2 tbsp olive oil for browning
  • 3 cloves minced garlic
  • Spices and/or pre-made sauces of your choosing to make curry or stew base
  • 1 28 oz can diced tomatoes
  • Cream and/or milk for curry
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch, for thickening if making stew
  • Vegetables of your choosing, such as carrots, potatoes, onions, or peas
  • Sides of your choosing, such as rice, rice noodles, mashed potatoes, pasta or flat bread

Refer to the original recipe for exact amounts and the rest of the ingredients.

Suggested Equipment

You’ll need the following equipment to cook your goat meat using this technique:

  • A slow cooker, such as a Crockpot, around 5-7 quarts in size
  • A heavy bottomed skillet for browning
  • A spatula or wooden spoon

How to Cook Goat Using the Slow Cooker

  1. Thaw goat meat if frozen.
  2. Lightly season the goat meat with salt and pepper and/or other spices as desired.
  3. Heat the olive oil in the skillet over medium high heat and once hot, add the goat meat pieces and brown on all sides. Work in batches to avoid overcrowding and steaming the meat, you want to get a good sear.
  4. Place goat meat in the slow cooker, along with the garlic, vegetables, tomatoes and any sauces and spices. If your sauce/base has dairy, or you plan on adding milk and/or cream, reserve for the end.
  5. Cook on low for 8-10 hours, stirring occasionally if able, until goat meat is nice and tender.
  6. Stir in any cream/milk or cornstarch and season to taste with salt and pepper and/or other spices as desired.

You’re done! Enjoy your curry or stew with sides of your choosing, such as rice, rice noodles, mashed potatoes, pasta or flat bread.
